{"id":1034,"date":"2014-06-25T11:23:15","date_gmt":"2014-06-25T19:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=1034"},"modified":"2015-01-22T12:12:04","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T20:12:04","slug":"normal-kids-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/normal-kids-today\/","title":{"rendered":"There are no normal kids today"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"TweetButton_button\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  data-url=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/normal-kids-today\/\" data-text=\"There are no normal kids today\" data-lang=\"en\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,\"script\",\"twitter-wjs\");<\/script><\/div>\n<p>If you listen to The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, there are no normal kids today. \u00a0They all suffer from &#8220;Sensory Processing Disorder&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every. \u00a0Blessed. \u00a0One. \u00a0Of. \u00a0Them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/2014\/06\/for-most-toddlers-tantrums-and.html\" target=\"_blank\">Althouse <\/a>I find the New Republic article <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/118319\/sensory-processing-disorders-myriad-symptoms-create-controversy?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=TNR%20Daily%20Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=TNR%20Daily%20Zephyr%20with%20LiveIntent%20-%20June%2025%2C%202014\" target=\"_blank\">Is &#8220;Sensory Processing Disorder&#8221; a Real Medical Condition?&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>The article is subtitled<em> &#8220;Thousands of parents say it is. \u00a0The Psychiatric establishment disagrees&#8221;<\/em>. \u00a0Well thank God for that. \u00a0A read of the article discloses a litany of parents with little common sense or parenting skills but seemingly with plenty of money. \u00a0And what do you do when you have a problem? \u00a0You throw money at it, that&#8217;s what. \u00a0Little Johnny won&#8217;t put his shoes on? \u00a0Hire an expert to give you advice like this:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">British mother complains her five-year-old throws tantrums any time he has to wear footwear&#8230; a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0month later&#8230;her occupational therapist recommended a daily ritual of rubbing her son\u2019s feet across the carpet, jumping 20 times, soaking his feet in cold water, and \u201csquishing\u201d them before putting his socks and shoes on: \u201cBoy, I don&#8217;t think I have time to do all this before school.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>What kind of normal five year old throws tantrums? \u00a0Oh that&#8217;s right&#8230;EVERY ONE OF THEM SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME! \u00a0In a glimmer of hope for the human race, the article states that the idea of &#8220;Sensory Processing Disorder&#8221; is &#8220;sheer quackery&#8221; and that there is no &#8220;consensus&#8221; among the psychiatric community.<\/p>\n<p>On the downside, there are &#8220;thousands&#8221; of parents \u00a0who say &#8220;oh no, this is real&#8221;. \u00a0Take a look at this graphic:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note: I have removed the illustration at the request of the copyright holder.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is not a single behavior on that list that I would not consider typical childhood behavior at one time or another. \u00a0Why are some of them even on there? \u00a0If your kid has a habit of sniffing or smelling objects or people, just ignore it. \u00a0It&#8217;s a phase &#8211; he will outgrow it by middle school, trust me. \u00a0His friends will help. \u00a0Or hers &#8211; no misogyny intended. \u00a0Of course you may prefer the regime of daily nostril massage recommended by &#8220;occupational therapists&#8221;. \u00a0That&#8217;ll be $250. \u00a0Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently when you are The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, everything looks like&#8230;you know. \u00a0Disorder or not, the symptoms have been around since children have been around. \u00a0And adults have developed skills to cope with them by recognizing one of the Laws of Human Nature: Children are master manipulators. \u00a0Their survival depends on their ability to manipulate their adults (parents) into providing food and shelter that they cannot provide themselves. \u00a0And they will not hesitate to expand the scope of their manipulative powers to control every action you take. \u00a0Most of those behaviors (or misbehaviors) are designed to get you to do\/not do what the child wants\/doesn&#8217;t want. \u00a0It&#8217;s that simple &#8211; and every time you give in to the child, it reinforces the behavior. Sidenote: \u00a0anyone notice anything?&#8230;Anyone? \u00a0<em>It&#8217;s a lot like some adult behavior as well<\/em>. \u00a0We humans are strange critters. \u00a0No wonder the ETs are staying away.<\/p>\n<p>I think people often underestimate the personal sacrifice parenting takes and some may be ill-equipped to devote the level of commitment it requires. Parenting\u00a0takes time, patience and most of all attention. \u00a0 Kiss your &#8220;me time&#8221; goodbye for about 25 years depending on the number of children you have. \u00a0Children are developing adults, and the job of a parent is to guide that process &#8211; \u00a0by being a loving nurturer, benevolent dictator and occasional assasin. \u00a0You are not your child&#8217;s friend. \u00a0If they want you to be their friend, Congratulations. \u00a0You have the upper hand in the power struggle of who manipulates who. \u00a0And don&#8217;t feel bad about it because they&#8217;d use it against you in a heartbeat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet If you listen to The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, there are no normal kids today. \u00a0They all suffer from &#8220;Sensory Processing Disorder&#8221; Every. \u00a0Blessed. \u00a0One. \u00a0Of. \u00a0Them.
