{"id":1722,"date":"2014-10-10T12:28:58","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T20:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=1722"},"modified":"2014-10-10T12:28:58","modified_gmt":"2014-10-10T20:28:58","slug":"talking-communicating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/talking-communicating\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking about communicating&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"TweetButton_button\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  data-url=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/talking-communicating\/\" data-text=\"Talking about communicating&#038;%238230;\" data-lang=\"en\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,\"script\",\"twitter-wjs\");<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Since my last post talked about communicating, let me communicate for a minute about talking.<\/p>\n<p>Actually my last post didn&#8217;t talk. \u00a0I wrote &#8211; you read. \u00a0Now this post will communicate &#8211; I&#8217;ll write, you read. \u00a0About talking. \u00a0Well, about language. \u00a0See? \u00a0We&#8217;re communicating!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll try to make this quick &#8211; I read a couple articles about language \u00a0&#8211; more preceisley about the evolution of language. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/110\/21\/8471.full.pdf+html\" target=\"_blank\">first article<\/a> was about something called &#8220;ultraconserved words&#8221; which, as near as I can tell, are words that are so fundamental to language that they change little enough over time that using a list of ultraconserved words a modern person could communicate with a person speaking a dialect 15,000 years old. \u00a0In other words, if I went back 15,000 years in my time machine I could communicate with English speakers of that era. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/languagesoftheworld.info\/bad-linguistics\/ultraconserved-words-reveal-linguistic-macro-families.html\" target=\"_blank\">second article<\/a> was a critique of the first article challenging it&#8217;s premise. \u00a0I won&#8217;t go into the details &#8211; both articles are interesting but somewhat heavy reading. \u00a0Follow the links if you want to give it a try. \u00a0I want to make a different but related point.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see how two people separated by 15,000 years of&#8230;what&#8217;s the word I want&#8230;evolution (?) could communicate effectively when people can barely communicate with each other today. So much of communication is context &#8211; perspective. \u00a0Two people separated by that much history would have no idea of the other&#8217;s perspective of the world around them.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m surprised when people today communicate at all. \u00a0It&#8217;s not that we don&#8217;t have the means. \u00a0And the means keep changing all the time. \u00a0How long until verbal communication becomes a thing of the past? \u00a0People have to have a common perspective &#8211; a shared context &#8211; to communicate effectvely. \u00a0So I guess what I meant to say is&#8230;hell&#8230;most of the time\u00a0<em>I don&#8217;t even know<\/em> what I&#8217;m talking about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet Since my last post talked about communicating, let me communicate for a minute about talking.
