{"id":1850,"date":"2014-11-21T21:54:35","date_gmt":"2014-11-22T05:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=1850"},"modified":"2024-11-07T20:18:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T04:18:29","slug":"music-friday-1968-billboard-hot-100-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/music-friday-1968-billboard-hot-100-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Music Friday &#8211; 1968 BillBoard Hot 100 Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"TweetButton_button\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  data-url=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/music-friday-1968-billboard-hot-100-edition\/\" data-text=\"Music Friday &#038;%238211; 1968 BillBoard Hot 100 Edition\" data-lang=\"en\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,\"script\",\"twitter-wjs\");<\/script><\/div>\n<p>The project to determine my peak music year continues this week with a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/archive\/charts\/1968\/hot-100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1968 BillBoard Hot 100<\/a>. \u00a0If you want to recap 1965, 66 and 67 you can click <a href=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=1841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the first time so far in this endeavor, the winner of the round not only had the most songs at the #1 position, but also the most overall time spent at #1 as well. \u00a01968 was an interesting year, as there were five individual songs that each spent four consecutive weeks or more at #1, not including one of the songs by this year&#8217;s winner that spent <em>nine consecutive weeks<\/em> at #1. \u00a0Dying of suspense? \u00a0OK, I&#8217;ll have mercy and announce the winner as&#8230;<em><strong>The Beatles!<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Somewhat anti-climactic, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0The Beatles had two songs that made #1 in 1968; \u00a0<em>Hello Goodbye<\/em> which spent 2 weeks at #1 (after having spent time at #1 the previous year also) and <em>Hey Jude<\/em> which spent an amazing nine consecutive weeks at #1. \u00a0So here you go.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hello Goodbye<\/em>, two weeks at #1<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rblYSKz_VnI?si=npQ2cvj2VZoy5Q3R\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And <em>Hey Jude<\/em>, nine weeks at #1<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mQER0A0ej0M?si=7ATd1RZOk1kuAmw9\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another interesting thing about <em>Hey Jude<\/em> is that it bucked the AM Radio format of the two and a half minute song, as it clocked in at a little over seven minutes, almost four minutes of which is &#8220;Na Na Na Na-na-na-na&#8221;. \u00a0As I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, it is possible The Beatles dominated the chart until their breakup in 1970\u00a0(I don&#8217;t know for sure &#8211; I have not cheated and looked ahead). \u00a0They&#8217;ve won every year now 1965 through 68. \u00a0I guess we&#8217;ll find out together.<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned that there were five songs that each spent four consecutive weeks or more at #1. \u00a0One of them is instantly recognizable as one of the best songs of the sixties&#8230;period. \u00a0I&#8217;ll just tell you the name of the artist: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otis_Redding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Otis Redding<\/a>. \u00a0Now listen:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rTVjnBo96Ug?si=2CH25e2hkH6V5eah\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A note of irony in that the song did not reach #1 until after Otis Redding&#8217;s death that year in a plane crash, the first posthumous #1 song in BillBoard Hot 100 history. \u00a0Too bad.<\/p>\n<p>Oh&#8230;also&#8230;<em>Sittin&#8217; On The Dock Of The Bay<\/em> is two minutes and forty two seconds long. \u00a0So it also bucked the two-and-a-half minute format. \u00a0Just by a lot less. \u00a0 See you next week when we wrap up the sixties with The 1969 BillBoard Hot 100. \u00a0See ya!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet The project to determine my peak music year continues this week with a look at the 1968 BillBoard Hot 100. \u00a0If you want to recap 1965, 66 and 67 you can click here.
