it&#8217;ll never happen again. \u00a0In fact, forget I said that&#8230;this never happened in the first \u00a0place. \u00a0Welcome to this perfectly on time Music Friday wherein I will examine the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/archive\/charts\/1972\/hot-100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BillBoard Hot 100 chart for the year 1972<\/a> in furtherance of my attempt to determine my &#8220;peak music year&#8221;. \u00a0A quest, incidentally that was inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/two-idle-questions-about-music.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this post at the Althouse blog<\/a>. \u00a0Althouse is a &#8220;who&#8221;, not a &#8220;where&#8221; . \u00a0Though she is aware. \u00a0Anyway, you should click over and take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her blog<\/a>. \u00a0It is well worth your time. \u00a0OK, hat-tipping now having been dispensed with, let us move on to the chart. \u00a0My first impression is that this years offerings are a fairly diverse group of songs with (without?) one notable absence &#8211; there are no counterculture overtones in any of the rock songs. \u00a0This seems a little odd to me, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">given the year<\/a>. \u00a0As I remember that time much of the unrest that began in the late 1960&#8217;s was coming to a boil. \u00a0Anyway, any social unrest of the time isn&#8217;t reflected in the music that charted that year &#8211; most of it is pretty typical pop music. \u00a0There&#8217;s also some serious nonsense, which I will adress in a followup post.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a little difficult to pick a &#8220;winner&#8221; since no group or artist had multiple songs reach #1, though one artist did reach #1 twice with the same song. \u00a0But if I declare him the winner, I will just have to end this right now by hanging myself. \u00a0Or treating myself to jumping off a nearby tower. \u00a0Because that artist is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilbert_O%27Sullivan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilbert O&#8217;Sullivan <\/a>and the song is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KC-U7ZnYYBE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Alone Again, Naturally<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0Another song worth noting, and possibly worth a &#8220;win&#8221; based soley on it&#8217;s iconic status in popular culture is <em>American Pie (parts I &amp; II)<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_McLean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don McLean<\/a>. \u00a0It feels a little like the folk-rock protest songs of the day (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KqeLZ-oDc8g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Feel Like I&#8217;m Fixin&#8217; To Die Rag<\/i><\/a>, anyone?), but McLean&#8217;s ballad is a lament &#8211; not a protest. \u00a0So here you go:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uAsV5-Hv-7U\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The song with the longest stretch at #1 was <em>The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roberta_Flack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberta Flack<\/a> with six weeks at the top. \u00a0On that basis I would have to say that it is also a contender for &#8220;winner&#8221; of 1972. \u00a0Give a listen:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fmpSWlVdKmo\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There were two other songs that spent four weeks apiece at #1. \u00a0<em>One was Without You<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Nilsson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Nilsson<\/a>. \u00a0I am a Nilsson fan, though this is not one of my favorites:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vAX1rkdzUH4\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The next one was <em>I Can See Clearly Now<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnny_Nash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johnny Nash<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zKvmlj2k_fM\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meh. \u00a0In my opinion. \u00a0Though it did have some longevity &#8211; I still hear it today. \u00a0But this is about <em><strong>my<\/strong><\/em> taste in music. \u00a0Me me me. \u00a0So, I guess I need to pick a winner. \u00a0I know who the loser is &#8211; me. \u00a0I don&#8217;t really care enough about any of these songs to pick a winner. \u00a0I&#8217;ll call it a four way tie and leave it at that. \u00a0Or you can vote for your favorite in the comments and I&#8217;ll declare the winner based on that vote count. \u00a0No matter what, I know one thing I can declare: \u00a01972 is NOT my &#8220;peak music year&#8221;. \u00a0That is all. \u00a0See ya!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet Sorry I&#8217;m late with this &#8211;
