read through to the end of this post and I will provide the answer. \u00a0The question caught my eye as I am a bit of a history buff and have been to all three places. \u00a0They are quite different from each other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamestown,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Jamestown<\/a> isn&#8217;t really a city at all, rather it&#8217;s more of a historical archaeology site. \u00a0It is the site of the first <em>permanent<\/em> English settlement in America, dating back to 1607.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 14px; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/x7CIgWZTdgw\" target=\"_blank\">The Bronx is up and the Battery&#8217;s down<\/a>. \u00a0The area was first visited by Europeans in 1524 (Spain) but not settled until 1624 by Dutch fur traders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?attachment_id=408\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-408\" alt=\"times-square-1024x768\" src=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/times-square-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/times-square-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/times-square-1024x768-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/times-square-1024x768-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Diego\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego<\/a> is regarded as the birthplace of California and is it&#8217;s second largest city. \u00a0It is spectacularly situated on the Pacific coast and has a beautiful climate. \u00a0It was first visited by Europeans (Spain) in 1542, but not permanently settled by Europeans until 1769.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?attachment_id=409\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-409\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-409\" alt=\"san-diego-skyline-958-x-639\" src=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/san-diego-skyline-958-x-639.jpg\" width=\"671\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/san-diego-skyline-958-x-639.jpg 958w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/san-diego-skyline-958-x-639-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/san-diego-skyline-958-x-639-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, what do they have in common? \u00a0They all were named after a &#8220;James&#8221;. \u00a0Jamestown, obviously named after a James, that is King James I of England. \u00a0New York, not so obviously was named after The Duke Of York (later King James II). \u00a0Finally, San Diego was named after Sebastian Vizcaino&#8217;s flagship <em>San Diego<\/em>, which is in English <em>Saint James<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet At The Volokh Conspiracy: \u00a0The question is asked &#8220;What do Jamestown (Virginia), San Diego and New York have in common?&#8221;
