{"id":499,"date":"2014-04-25T15:22:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T23:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=499"},"modified":"2014-04-25T15:22:17","modified_gmt":"2014-04-25T23:22:17","slug":"does-anyone-know-what-it-means-to-be-a-man-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/does-anyone-know-what-it-means-to-be-a-man-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Anyone Know What it means to be a man today?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"TweetButton_button\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  data-url=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/does-anyone-know-what-it-means-to-be-a-man-today\/\" data-text=\"Does Anyone Know What it means to be a man today%3f\" data-lang=\"en\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,\"script\",\"twitter-wjs\");<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Physical attributes aside, are men becoming obsolete? \u00a0First, a tip of the hat to the article that got me thinking about this: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/2014\/04\/23\/why-are-we-so-conflicted-about-manhood-in-the-modern-age\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0&#8220;Why Are We So Conflicted About Manhood In The Modern Age?&#8221;<\/a> \u00a0which I found at the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Art of Manliness<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a good blog and not what you&#8217;d think given the name.<\/p>\n<p>So, anyway back to <em>my<\/em> thoughts. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m alone in my belief that early in the history of mankind (personkind?) gender roles developed because the division of labor was essential to the very survival of the social unit, be it family or tribe (the neccessity of the social unit is another story entirely). \u00a0Men being physically larger and stronger took on the now familair male roles of hunter, warrior and protector while women, the bearers of offspring took on the female roles of caretaker and nurturer. As history has progressed and civilization taken hold the lines between gender roles have blurred. \u00a0Now we find ourselves at a point in history where resources have never been more plentiful and the environment has never been safer for individuals. \u00a0Whereas is the past people grouped together for survival or protection, an individual can today survive and indeed thrive on their own without the support of a family or tribe. \u00a0So what of the gender roles? \u00a0Modern societies still have need for the traditonal female gender roles as not much has changed regarding child bearing, rearing and the need for a nurturing environment. \u00a0But the need for tradional male gender roles has faded. \u00a0Sustenance is easily acquired, no skill in hunting is required. \u00a0Such protection as is now needed is provided by a slim percentage of the population that is increasingly female. \u00a0Technology makes many of the tasks required for &#8220;survival&#8221; as easily performed by women as men. \u00a0Further, the actions associated with female gender roles seem to be actions that one might be naturally inclined to take, while the male actions involve a level of physical exertion or danger and so might require a certain amount of inner discipline to undertake. \u00a0And if it&#8217;s not essential, why bother?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?attachment_id=501\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-501\" src=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Being-a-man-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Being a man\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Being-a-man-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Being-a-man-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Being-a-man-270x270.jpg 270w, https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Being-a-man.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taken a step further, male behavioral traits today are often looked upon with disdain and indeed young boys are discouraged of boyish behavior in school. \u00a0Normal &#8220;boy&#8221; behavior is now called hyperactivity or ADHD and many boys grow up today without a male role model and so never learn to properly emulate male behavior. \u00a0As the human race continues to evolve, will the male of the species be relegated to &#8220;drone&#8221; status, required only for physical tasks that machines can&#8217;t perform or fertilization of the queen(s)? \u00a0When all is said and done does society today have any need for male behavior, or are men expected now \u00a0to just be women with penises?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still working on the answers to those questions. \u00a0<em>But one thing I do know &#8211; men and women are different<\/em>. \u00a0Physically and mentally. \u00a0In their motivations and their responses. \u00a0And so there will always be some human behaviors that will be considered male (and female). \u00a0The questions will remain &#8211; the answers will change as we do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet Physical attributes aside, are men becoming obsolete?
