{"id":744,"date":"2014-05-22T10:57:51","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T18:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/?p=744"},"modified":"2014-05-22T10:57:51","modified_gmt":"2014-05-22T18:57:51","slug":"climate-change-reporters-intentionally-misleading-or-just-blissfully-unaware-of-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/climate-change-reporters-intentionally-misleading-or-just-blissfully-unaware-of-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change reporters &#8211; intentionally misleading or just blissfully unaware of history?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"TweetButton_button\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  data-url=\"https:\/\/ego-vero.net\/main\/climate-change-reporters-intentionally-misleading-or-just-blissfully-unaware-of-history\/\" data-text=\"Climate Change reporters &#038;%238211; intentionally misleading or just blissfully unaware of history%3f\" data-lang=\"en\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,\"script\",\"twitter-wjs\");<\/script><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;or both? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/20\/science\/the-melting-isnt-glacial.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times ran an article on May 19th, titled &#8220;The Big Melt Accelerates&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0You see, the BIG MELT is on&#8230;and accelerating! \u00a0Women and minorities hardest hit! \u00a0OK, I added that last part. \u00a0At the top of the story are two pictures of the Muir Glacier in Alaska; \u00a0the first is taken in 1941 and shows the huge glacier, the next photo is August 2004 and shows the glacier has retreated far up the valley. \u00a0Wow&#8230;but wait. \u00a0Some cursory investigation reveals an interesting fact. \u00a0Extensive records exist about Alaska&#8217;s glaciers from about the time it was settled by Europeans in the late 18th century and the Muir Glacier and indeed Alaska&#8217;s glaciers in total have been retreating for the last 200 years, with the lion&#8217;s share of that occuring before 1900. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2014\/05\/deceptions-of-the-climatistas.php\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Hayward at Powerline <\/a>shows us a picture of the Muir Glacier taken in 1951 that appears identical to the Times photo from 2004 &#8211; so no or very little retreat from 1951 to 2004. \u00a0That&#8217;s some <em>acceleration! <\/em>\u00a0I didn&#8217;t want to steal the photos and chart form his post, so click over and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2014\/05\/deceptions-of-the-climatistas.php\" target=\"_blank\">read the whole thing there<\/a>. \u00a0Definitely worth your time.<\/p>\n<p>The Times then moves on to quote experts worrying about the sea level rising due to the retreat of Greenland&#8217;s ice sheet. \u00a0A few minutes on wikipedia tells me that Greenland&#8217;s ice sheet has varied over time, but most notably that:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #252525;\">&#8220;Scientists who probed 2\u00a0km (1.2\u00a0mi) through a Greenland glacier to recover the some of the oldest plant\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"DNA\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DNA\">DNA<\/a><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0on record said that the planet was far warmer hundreds of thousands of years ago than is generally believed. DNA of trees, plants, and insects including\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Butterfly\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Butterfly\">butterflies<\/a><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0and spiders from beneath the southern Greenland glacier was estimated to date to 450,000 to 900,000\u00a0years ago, according to the remnants retrieved from this long-vanished boreal forest. &#8220;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Got that? \u00a0Half a million to almost a million years ago, Greenland was covered in a large arboreal forest which is NOW under 2Km of ice. \u00a0Furthermore:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #252525;\">&#8220;These DNA samples suggest that the temperature probably reached 10\u00a0\u00b0C (50\u00a0\u00b0F) in the summer and \u221217\u00a0\u00b0C (1.4\u00a0\u00b0F) in the winter. They also indicate that during the last\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Interglacial\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interglacial\">interglacial<\/a><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0period, 130,000\u2013116,000\u00a0years ago, when local temperatures were on average 5\u00a0\u00b0C (9\u00a0\u00b0F) higher than now, the glaciers on Greenland did not completely melt away.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A hundred thousand years ago (give or take) temperatures were <em>higher than they are now<\/em> and the glaciers did not melt away. I found this information in a few minutes and so could the Times reporter if he wanted to give the story a little balance. \u00a0But they don&#8217;t want balance&#8230;the science is settled, don&#8217;t you know?<\/p>\n<p>Next, let&#8217;s not forget all that ice in Antarctica. \u00a0The Times experts say it is melting and <em>&#8220;Scientists say that the melting will continue as long as the heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases.
